That was pretty stupid. Sorry about that.

The more up-to-date version in CVS does help though. I've now got a  
proof-of-concept working, and you can download the following:

  * Patch for the memcached to support both append and areplace  
operations
  * Patch for libmemcache to deal with these new commands

along with:

  * A Tcl client API for memcached (using libmemcache)
