Final (maybe?) patch for socket cleanup

   Yikes.  I just got trunk merged onto binary on the plane.  This  
collides with a few of the areas I handled conflicts.

   Hopefully I'll approach civilization soon and can get that code  
somewhere where you can see if it makes sense.
