In my experience the (latest) 2.6 kernels are very stable.<br>

The 2.4 series does have the "advantage" of having fewer new features,
so there may be somewhat less chance of bugs or mandatory security
upgrades. This is my guess though.<br>

I believe there is an epoll backport for the 2.4 kernels...<br>

made me wonder.. I'm sure they have reasons to do that, but I couldn't
