This is the critical point.  More than "just a few people" don't
understand these things.  You're thinking about too narrow a scope of
users.

On LiveJournal we saw people trying to login with all sorts of
ridiculous things, like their AOL username or their AOL email address.
 I mention AOL only because it's representative of casual users --
this sort of confusion exists everywhere, not just on AOL.

I think Jabber got this wrong, too.  It's too late to disassociate "@"
from email.
