It looks to me (from only a cursory glance) like LID also provides 
profile information, while OpenID specifically leaves that to some other 
mechanism.

Other than that, it seems to be almost identical to OpenID. It just uses 
different URL arguments. One thing I *think* is true is that for LID, 
the identity and the identity server URL are the same thing, though with 
only one demo login to test with I can't really tell.

It seems to me that this presents an implementation difficulty which 
will perturb adoption: LiveJournal's theoretical LID identities would 
either have to be something odd like user.lid.livejournal.com or the 
user site handler would have to pick up on the special LID arguments and 
present the approval page.

On the plus side, I can't imagine it would be that hard to implement a 
combo LID and OpenID identity server so that LID users could also use 
OpenID.
