A few thoughts:

a) It should be mandatory to ensure adoption.  Best way to do that is  
if LJ only returns the openid server with that parameter. :)

b) What's the format?  Only one line with the openid link tag?   A  
full <head> block?   "Anything, but must be sgml-ish and include the  
<link> tag"?

The X header is too hackish for me.   99% of all applications will  
just ignore the extra query parameter if they don't know what to do  
with it.  Seems much more robust.
