failed to daemon()

Ok, we found the problem.  We started having other problems on these 
boxes and that lead to this bug:

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=114507

It seems that the / dir of our new Gentoo boxes had the wrong 
permissions.  Don't know how it got that way, but it did.
