Actual memory used

I hope that someone here can help. I've been looking at the stats that 
come out of memcache as I want to know (and be warned before) our 
memcache servers fill up with data.

I read* that memcache only cleans up memory when a key expires or when 
it runs out of space. But that post was from nearly 2 years ago. Is this 
still the case? Is there any way of knowing exactly how full a memcache 
server is with only non-expired data?
