Check out http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpdance Sharedance is  
(IMHO) better suited to session storage than memcache as it's non- 
volatile (disk based) and thus can also store much larger volumes.  
PHPDance adds a layer on top to provide redundancy - it could  
probably be adapted to work with mc, though that could be another  
case of #2 mentality again.
