perl client crash after timeout while connecting

I can attest that this patch fixes the issue. I have a couple of long-running 
POE daemons that would consistently segfault whenever a memcached server went 
offline. With this patch in place, I no longer see those segfaults, nor am I 
able to induce them with force.
