Buffer allocation

Hi,
I've seen that memcached allocates a new buffer whet a mc_get() call is
done.
This means that on each mc_get() call a new malloc is done, right?
There is someway to get directly the pointer to the buffer in which
memcached as allocated the item?
The malloc() and free() calls on each called item reduces the performance of
the application (and memcached too) or not?
Thanks,
Michele
