Increase sql queries

In order to use memcache I've had to split apart complex mysql queries into
tiny separate queries (so that items can be placed into their lists).  As a
result some pages have like 80 queries, up from like 20 or so.  Is this
normal in the design usage of memcache?

I do see huge improvement upon page re-visits though.
