Lightweight protocol

Is it possible to use a more lightweight protocol then HTTP with
mogilefs?  We're investigating mogilefs for storing large numbers of
medium-sized files which we will need to be able to stream to compute
nodes for processing.  Is this something mogilefs can do?  Since we
don't need to serve these files, something more lightweight that HTTP
might make sense.
