We've been doing a fair amount of thinking on exactly this question  
for some time, and your question just caused me to finally finish

We actually have a partial implementation of this in the management  
tools for our InfoGrid LID ... group membership list is an Atom feed  
that also supports the OpenSearch extensions. http://netmesh.org/
