Wierd problems with memcachd

When i use memcached to cache some things on a PHP site it works for a minute 
but then the whole site just blocks (the request is being processed for very 
very very long time). It starts working instantly when i stop memcached.

I am using memcached 1.1.11 on PHP5. The same problem appears in both PHP APIs 
that are available.
