memcached 1.2.2 compile error

I think this is a problem with the C syntax we're using that causes
gcc 2.96 to choke on the code.  Can you try removing the assert()
calls and see if that helps?

You do know that you're much better off using a 2.6 kernel based
distro for memcache?  If that choice is within your control I suggest
you upgrade.
