memcached download

I just downloaded memcached-1.2.1.tar.gz, but I don't find memcached binary in list of files in the tar. Do I have to compile it? I was hoping to be able to run something like:
   
  # ./memcached -d -m 2048 -l 10.0.0.40 -p 11211
   
  out of the box. Also, can I run a Java client on a Windows box against a memcached server running on a Unix (Solaris) box?
