Status of Tag implementation?

How far off is memcache from having tag support?  I know there was 
recent discussion on the list about how to implement tagging but I don't 
know if there was any consensus reached.

Tagging would be of great use to me.  In the next few months we will 
start making big updates to Gigoit.org and a tagging system sounds like 
it would help us quite a bit.
