Definition/purpose of device

Hi,

Sorry for the n00b question but it seems there is a definition missing from the
definitions page on the wiki.

Device

I'm a little confused as to what a device represents, the mogilefs home page
states that "MogileFS replicates the files between devices which are on
different hosts", so what is the use-case for having multiple devices on one
host?
