I agree. We should just leave it be now and wait for implementations.
All this spec-related discussion is scaring off potential implementors,
I'd bet.

Until such a time as we need to move to a "version 2", I think OpenID's
authentication layer is "done".

So where to now? Implementing it in everything (obviously) and thinking
of neat things we can layer atop it, I think!
