memcached without php memchace enabled?

I am a bit confused regarding the installation of memcached.

In order to install memcached to a server, does that have to have in its php build the memcache function enabled?

My host told me they couldn't do it for me. I looked somewhere else and they said they don't do it either. If this is a pre-requisite for running memcached, does anyone know of some good hosts that have this enabled?
